The Vought F4U Corsair a legendary World War Two US Navy and US Marine Corps fighter was one of many stars at Aviation Nation 2014 at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. This particular example put on a great display and some speed in its passes. Great to see (and hear)!

During World War Two the F4U Corsair in US Navy and USMC service achieved 2,140 air combat victories for the loss of only 189 F4U’s to enemy aircraft. This equated to an impressive overall kill ratio of more than 11:1. In the right hands she was a deadly machine indeed!

I saw an interview of “Black Sheep Squadron” actor and pilot Robert Conrad who lamented that he never advanced to the point of actually flying one. Seems they were a bit difficult to handle. Obviously the Japanese could not. Do you know if they were still in service during Korea?

Hi Mike, yes I would have been champing at the bit to take a flight too! The F4U was used by the US Navy and USMC in Korea for close support duties (no match for the MiG-15 but they did score some air to air victories shooting down various Soviet WW2 era aircraft and at least one MiG-15 that strayed into the guns of an F4U pilot).
