Technik Museum Speyer – East German Tech

To complement the aircraft formerly operated by West Germany during the Cold War, the Technik Museum Speyer also has a number of aircraft operated by the German Democratic Republic (GDR/DDR) – East Germany. Some of the former GDR aircraft were integrated into the new German Luftwaffe following the German unification of 1990 and others were tested by the Test and Evaluation Center 61 (WTD 61) in Manching, Germany in the early 1990’s. There are plenty of viewing platforms that allow you to see the aircraft that are displayed on the ground and atop pylons from different angles to appreciate the aircraft which is great!

In my next post I will show the rest of the Soviet era aircraft on display at Speyer. It’s such a great collection!

  1. Wonderful set of pictures – thanks for sharing! The way museum aircraft are displayed always intrigues me. For a while, one of the main collections here in NZ got ‘chuck it out in a field and we’ll mow the grass under them’, but luckily the museum got more money for the preservation they wanted. I have to wonder… what is the structural integrity of the pillars that the rather elevated Lufthansa B747 has been set on? 🙂
